Transfer Station Permits: Effective July 1, 2025, Shelburne residents will be required to display a mirror tag permit upon entering the property in order to utilize the Shelburne Transfer Station. No more than two pre-numbered permits will be issued to each Shelburne household. There is no fee. Proof of residency is required. Please see Town Administrator, Terry Narkewicz or Treasurer/Collector, Angel Bragdon to obtain a permit(s).

The annual Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Guide provides information on how to recycle, reuse, donate, compost, safely dispose of, or trash your discards. Get the 32-page guide online at: https://tinyurl.com/RRRN-2025

ALL (TOWN NAME) RESIDENTS CAN USE THE GREENFIELD TRANSFER STATION YEAR-ROUND. THE GREENFIELD TRANSFER STATION ACCEPTS A WIDE VARIETY OF MATERIALS. THERE IS A FEE FOR MOST ITEMS. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT THIS PAGE.

Composting

Shelburne residents can purchase an Earth Machine backyard compost bin at a subsidized price of $25. The subsidized compost bin can be purchased at the Franklin County Solid Waste District. Visit https://franklincountywastedistrict.org/Composting for information on backyard composting and the District’s office location. The town encourages all residents to remove organic material from the trash and use a backyard compost bin. Approximately 25% of household trash is organic material that can be diverted to a compost bin.

Free Food and Paper Wast Compost Program at the Shelburne Transfer Station: Reduce household trash and related expenses by separating all types of solid food waste (no liquids) and bringing to the special bin at the transfer station. This program goes beyond the backyard compost bin by accepting meat, bones, poultry, fish, cheese, and much more. Materials are composted at martin's Farm in Greenfield.

Bulky Items - Companies Offering Pickup & Disposal

If you have bulky items (mattresses, upholstered furniture, wood furniture, toilets, sinks, and carpet) that you are unable to transport to the Greenfield Transfer Station (year-round) or to the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District's May and October Clean Sweep events, there are local companies that you can hire to pick up and properly dispose of the items.

You will be contracting directly with the private hauler and will be responsible for paying any pickup and disposal fees that are charged. This is NOT a service provided by the Town of Shelburne. You are making a private arrangement with a private company to perform a service, and the Town does not control the fees that are charged.

This list is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all companies that may provide this service, and does not constitute any endorsement or recommendation by the Town of Shelburne. Companies are listed alphabetically.

Annual Collection Days:

The Franklin County Solid Waste Management District holds its "Clean Sweep" bulky waste collection days each May and October. Check the website for upcoming dates: https://franklincountywastedistrict.org/p/70/Clean-Sweep-Bulky-Waste-Collection

The drop-off site most convenient to Shelburne is the Mohawk Trail Regional High School. Residents may bring a wide range of items to either collection: tires, appliances, scrap metal, furniture, mattresses, carpeting, construction debris, computers, televisions, propane gas tanks, and other large items. Materials will be recycled whenever possible. Residents do not need to pre-register for the collection. Disposal fees, cash only, will be collected from residents during check-in. Businesses may participate.

Before each collection, a complete list of prices for the most common items is made available at participating town halls, town transfer stations, the District office at 117 Main Street in Greenfield, and online at: https://franklincountywastedistrict.org/p/71/Clean-Sweep-Price-Guide
